If you're passionate about history and giving back, the John Alexander Chapter in Alexandria, Virginia offers meaningful ways to connect with the community and make a tangible impact. We actively support education, civic engagement, historic preservation, and our veterans through hands-on projects across the Northern Virginia area. Whether we're funding local scholarships, welcoming new citizens, honoring heroes with Honor Flights and Wreaths Across America, or rolling up our sleeves for seasonal environmental clean-ups, our work is deeply rooted in service. We also celebrate our rich regional heritage by participating in iconic local traditions like the Scottish Walk, the George Washington Birthday Parade, and Independence Day events at Mount Vernon and Gunston Hall. Marion Moncure Duncan Traveling Tray Award
Since the 1960s, in honor of Marion Moncure Duncan's lifelong dedication to supporting young women and DAR, the John Alexander Chapter, NSDAR, has given this award to chapters across Virginia who have done extraordinary worto support and/or promote Junior membership. Bicentennial Scarf
As the bicentennial celebration of the United States' 200th birthday swept across the country in the 1970s, the ladies of the John Alexander Chapter, NSDAR, came up with the idea of creating and selling a patriotic scarf to raise funds for historic preservation projects to honor their American Revolutionary War ancestors. The blue and white silk scarves were a hit and thousands were sold far and wide!
Complimentary scarves were sent to several VIPs as gifts, including in 1972, to Mrs. Betty Ford, the First Lady of the United States, and to Mrs. Jinks Holton, the First Lady of Virginia.
If you have a bicentennial scarf, inherited a scarf from your mother or grandmother, or remember them being worn by ladies in and around the Washington, D.C., metro area in the 1970s, we would love to hear from you.
